As September approaches & we think about a new school year, an overlooked health issue for school-aged children is backpack safety.
Young children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and the incorrect use of overweight backpacks does not help.
I am here to help you as you prepare for the new school year together with a few tips you can give the kids to follow to make sure the backpack is worn properly, secure and comfortable.
Get the Right One
The backpack needs to be appropriate for their needs, it should be super sturdy, comfy straps and be big enough for school things without being too heavy.
Get Sorted
Before you even put the backpack on, make sure the things inside are organised, utilise all the sections and pockets to separate books, pens & pencils.
Get Ready
Loosen all the straps so the backpack is easier to put on, adjust the straps evenly on both sides so that it sits comfortably on their back, centered and snug – not hanging too low or high.
Tighten the shoulder straps to ensure the backpack is secure but not too tight, The bottom of the backpack should align with hips.
Get Wiggling
Place heavier items closer to your back & lighter items, push out towards the outside of the backpack, this will help with balance and reduce back strain.
Get Both Arms In
Make sure it is not slung over one shoulder, using both straps helps to evenly distribute the weight & prevent strain on one side of the body
Get Feeling the Weight
Try to keep the backpack’s even, it should not really exceed the total of your body weight to prevent back pain and discomfort.
Get Used to Taking Breaks
If you have a long journey to school, take little breaks to give your shoulders and back a rest. Take the backpack off and have a little stretch if needed.
Have a Great School Year
