(And Why Ice Packs & Your Wedge Matter More Than You Think)
Well, what a disappointing end to what has been a fantastic few weeks! After such a cracking game on Saturday night, it wasn’t quite meant to be for England.
I’ve absolutely loved this World Cup campaign. Seeing the kids getting involved, learning all the players’ names and wanting to watch every match has been brilliant. Combined with the sunshine and long summer evenings, it really has felt like the whole nation has been together, all hoping for the same thing.
It wasn’t to be this time but the lads should be incredibly proud of themselves. A World Cup semi final is an amazing achievement and they came so close. Unlucky, England… here’s to the Euros in two years’ time. We go again!
Back in the clinic, it’s been another busy week. I’ve been working closely with our sports massage team, helping people get themselves ready for the summer holidays. If you’ve got a few aches and pains that you’ve been putting off sorting before you head away, now’s a great time to get yourself booked in.
Our £50 massage offer is still running for another couple of days, so if you’ve been thinking about treating yourself (or someone else), make sure you use the link below before it finishes.
Outside of work, this weekend we’re looking forward to catching up with some university friends who are coming down from Bristol, before heading off to a 40th birthday party over in Sutton Green. It should be a great weekend and a nice chance to relax before the summer holidays really kick in.
What Happens During Your First Chiropractic Adjustment
Understanding what to expect after your first chiropractic adjustment can help you navigate your recovery and maximise the benefits of your first chiropractic adjustment. It’s important to know that this experience sets the stage for your overall wellness.
After your first chiropractic adjustment, you might wonder how your body will respond to the changes initiated by that first chiropractic adjustment and that’s completely normal.
Each first chiropractic adjustment is unique and can affect each individual differently, emphasizing the importance of personalized care.
One of the questions I get asked most often after someone’s first adjustment is: “So… what should I expect now?” It’s a great question.
How you feel after your first chiropractic adjustment is just the beginning of a journey that may lead to improved health and well being through continued care. Embracing the process following your first chiropractic adjustment can enhance its benefits and lead to lasting improvements.
Remember, each first chiropractic adjustment lays the foundation for your healing journey and future health.
Many patients report feeling different sensations after their first chiropractic adjustment, which can vary widely from person to person.
After your first chiropractic adjustment, your body begins to adapt to a new normal, and it’s essential to give it time for the full effects to take place.
Your body will need time to adjust following your first chiropractic adjustment, but the benefits will be worth it.
Some people walk out feeling like a new person. Others feel a little sore. A few even wonder if the adjustment has “worked” because they don’t feel dramatically different straight away.
The truth is, your first adjustment is the beginning of a process, not the finish line.
Just like going to the gym for the first time won’t instantly make you stronger, one chiropractic adjustment starts your body’s journey towards better movement and healing. What you do in the hours and days afterwards can make a real difference.
That’s why I spend so much time talking to patients about using ice packs and if we’ve recommended one, their spinal wedge.
Let’s explain why.
Post first chiropractic adjustment, you may notice your body learning to move differently. After a first chiropractic adjustment, the adjustments can start to create lasting changes in your body.
Your Body Is Learning a New Normal
Imagine you’ve been driving with your steering wheel slightly crooked for years.
Eventually, it starts to feel normal.
Then one day it’s straightened properly.
For a little while, it actually feels… strange.
Your spine works in a similar way.
Many of our patients have developed movement patterns over months or even years. Muscles tighten to protect certain areas, joints become stiff and your nervous system adapts to these changes.
When we perform an adjustment, we’re restoring movement to joints that haven’t been moving well.
Your brain now has to process this new information.
It’s almost like updating the software on your phone. Things may need a little time to settle before everything runs smoothly.
Is It Normal to Feel Sore?
Absolutely.
Some patients feel nothing other than relief.
Others experience mild soreness for 24 to 48 hours.
This is completely normal and often feels similar to the ache you get after trying a new exercise.
It’s not because anything has gone wrong.
Instead, your muscles, ligaments and joints are adapting to moving differently.
Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions after your first chiropractic adjustment.
You may notice:
- Mild aching around the treated area
- Slight stiffness
- Muscles feeling like they’ve had a workout
- Temporary tiredness
- Improved movement, even if you’re still a little sore
Most of these symptoms settle quickly as your body adapts.
Why We Recommend Ice (Not Heat)
One of the biggest mistakes people make after an adjustment is reaching straight for the hot water bottle.
It feels comforting but it isn’t always the best choice immediately after treatment.
Following an adjustment, there can be a small amount of natural inflammation as the tissues begin adapting.
Ice helps calm this response.
It can:
- Reduce inflammation
- Ease muscle soreness
- Help settle irritated tissues
- Make recovery more comfortable
Think of it as giving your body the best environment to heal.
How to Use an Ice Pack
We usually recommend:
- Wrap the ice pack in a towel.
- Apply it for 15 minutes.
- Remove it for at least 45 minutes before using it again.
- Repeat as advised by your chiropractor.
Never place ice directly onto the skin.
Many patients are surprised by how much better they feel after using ice consistently during the first couple of days.
Why Your Spinal Wedge Is So Important
If we’ve recommended a spinal wedge, it isn’t just another piece of equipment to gather dust in the corner of the bedroom.
It’s there for a very specific reason.
During your assessment, we may identify changes in the natural curves of your spine.
Years of desk work, driving, looking down at phones and previous injuries can all alter your posture over time.
An adjustment helps improve joint movement.
The wedge helps encourage your spine to maintain a healthier position between visits.
Think of it this way: An adjustment is like straightening a young tree. The wedge acts like the support stake that helps the tree stay in its new position while it grows stronger. Without that support, it’s much easier for old habits to return.
Why Consistency Beats Intensity
Many people think healing comes from one big treatment.
In reality, it’s the small things you do consistently that often make the biggest difference.
Using your ice pack.
Share your experiences after your first chiropractic adjustment to help others understand the process.
Spending a few minutes on your wedge.
Doing your rehabilitation exercises.
Going for regular walks.
Being mindful of your posture.
Make the most out of your first chiropractic adjustment by following the aftercare advice given.
Each one might seem small on its own but together they help reinforce the changes we’re making in the clinic.
“I Felt Great… Then My Pain Came Back.”
This is another conversation we have quite often.
After an adjustment, it’s common to experience periods where you feel much better, followed by moments where symptoms seem to return.
This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve gone backwards.
Your body is adapting.
Healing is rarely a straight line.
Think about learning to ride a bike.
You don’t go from falling off to riding perfectly overnight.
There are wobbles along the way.
Your spine follows a similar pattern as it learns healthier movement.
What Can You Do to Help Your Recovery?
Here are a few simple tips that can make a big difference after your first adjustment:
- Use your ice pack as recommended.
- Spend time using your spinal wedge if we’ve prescribed one.
- Complete your rehabilitation exercises.
- Stay hydrated.
- Keep moving with gentle walks rather than staying in bed.
- Avoid heavy lifting or sudden twisting movements for the rest of the day unless we’ve advised otherwise.
- Listen to your body and allow it time to adapt.
The more consistent you are, the more likely you are to get the best results from your care.
Every Adjustment Builds on the Last
One adjustment can create an important change, but lasting improvements usually happen through a series of treatments combined with good habits at home.
Our goal isn’t simply to help you feel better for a day or two.
It’s to help your spine move better, support your nervous system and give you the tools to stay healthier for the long term.
That’s why we place just as much importance on what happens between appointments as what happens during them.
